A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD

Eddy AltineEddy Altiné, M.S.Ed.

Greetings,

Welcome to the site of the Haitian American Association Against Cancer, Inc. (HAAAC). In the late 90’s, cancer was classified as America’s No. 2 killer, eclipsed only by heart disease. However, by the turn of this century, cancer is classified as the number one killer disease. An important fact is that, Prior to 1997, cancer education in Haitian Creole was virtually non-existent, even though Haitians constitute the second largest immigrant group in Miami-Dade County, Florida.

HAAAC, a non-profit, 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, community-based organization, was founded in May of 1997. It is an agency dedicated to the spearheading of Haitian Creole Cancer awareness, prevention and treatment. HAAAC's purpose, actions, and objectives are directed toward one goal: decreasing cancer death rates and increasing awareness of the importance of early detection and treatment among the uninsured and underserved Haitian-American community of South Florida. HAAAC’s mission statement is “Helping to save lives and making a difference through education and early detection”.

HAAAC’s emergence in South Florida and its acceptance by the Haitian community as well as by American medical institutions, stem from its consistent efforts to close the gap in health disparities among Haitians, execute efficiently and effectively its cancer awareness program in a culturally-sensitive manner, and negotiate and facilitate services at no cost to the Haitian population, who otherwise could not afford such services.

As you browse HAAAC’s website, I would like to receive feedback from you in regards to the site and cancer issues that you would like to be addressed in the site by e-mailing me directly at info@haaac.org or ealtine@aol.com

Over the past eight years HAAAC has provided free cancer screenings to the medically uninsured/undeserved in our community, however the battle against cancer continues. As you know, there isn’t a person who can say that they do not have a friend or relative who has battled this vicious disease. HAAAC is working tirelessly to detect cancer in its early stages by providing free screening to the community. We are requesting that you help 1, 2 or 3 very special people who need cancer screenings right now.

1 man $125.00(PSA/DRE)
1 woman $75.00 (Mammogram)
1 woman $85(Pap smear)

I am requesting your support in our efforts to screen those individuals who would normally go unseen by a doctor. Your tax-deductible donation will help us help those in our community fight their battle against cancer. Each and every gift made is critical to our effort. Great strides have been made, but we still have a long way to go. Please be a hero and make an on-line donation via our secure server (Paypal) to the Haitian American Association Against Cancer, Inc., for it takes more than courage to beat cancer.

Thank you for your thoughtfulness and generosity!
