in Creole...Mr. Jacques Albert Calixte
Dear Friends:
I first learned about the dangers of breast cancer in 1990, when two of my mother's friends died of the disease within two months of each other. Both of them had turned down medical treatments.
Four years later (1994), my mother, Denise Calixte, was diagnosed with breast cancer.
Her doctor recommended surgery, but she refused and turned instead to the church for traditional Haitian remedies. By the time she changed her mind and returned to the doctor for help, there was nothing that anyone could do for her. The cancer had spread all over the body and she died on June 7, 1995 at the age of 68.
I do not have any words to describe my feelings about losing my mother in this tragic way. But, I can find words to talk about cancer. In this way, I can work to make sure that no one else has to suffer this kind of devastating and needless loss.
You, too, can help in our fight to educate our brothers and sisters about early detection of cancer and treatment in the Haitian community. Your membership in the Haitian American Association Against Cancer, Inc. can support vital community education that reaches out to Haitian men and women, as well as others who may not be receiving the medical care they need.
Finally, you can help us immeasurably with your volunteer efforts. Please feel free to give us a call at 305-572-1825 to find out more about how to get involved.
