| Event Description: | HAITIAN AMERICAN ASSOCIATION AGAINST CANCER TO CELEBRATE FIFTH ANNUAL GALA Dr. Kenneth Chu of the National Cancer Institute to Provide Keynote Local Television and Radio Personalities Serve as Hosts Miami, FL — The Haitian American Association Against Cancer (HAAAC) will celebrate its Fifth Annual Fundraising Gala on Saturday, October 9, 2004, at the Hyatt Regency Miami, 400 S.E. Second Avenue. Dr. Kenneth C. Chu of the National Cancer Institute will provide the keynote presentation. Television personality Danielle Knox of CBS 6 and radio personality Herntz Pharnord of WLQI will host the event under the theme “Lifting the Spirit; Lighting the Path.” Tickets are $75. Sponsorship opportunities are still available as follows: Presenting Sponsor - $5,000; Candles of Hope Sponsor - $4,000; Platinum Sponsor - $3,000; Gold Sponsor - $2,000; Silver Sponsor - $1,500; Table Sponsor - $750. The event begins at 6:00 p.m. with a silent auction, featuring the works of various Haitian artists, and the dinner and program begins at 7:00 p.m. The gala will also feature a special candle lighting ceremony as a way of renewing the hope for a cure, and a special awards ceremony honoring various people within the Miami-Dade community in the categories of Breakthrough and Research, Sharing and Caring and Lighthouse of Leadership. Dr. Kenneth Chu will discuss the latest medicines and technologies in cancer research and development as well as health care disparity issues in America. His presentation will also touch on the importance of community outreach efforts to underserved populations. Jacques-Albert Calixte (whose mother died of breast cancer) and Dr. Rudolph Moise (whose father died of prostate cancer) established HAAAC in May 1997 to educate the public, especially Haitians and Haitian-Americans about the early detection and the treatment of cancer. The organization provides patient counseling, medical diagnosis in Creole, pre- and post-surgery counseling, home and hospital visitations, trainings and workshops and 24-hour crisis counseling. |
