lactation
:
production of milk in the breast.
laparoscope
:
a long, slender tube inserted into the abdomen through a very small incision. The laparoscope allows the surgeon to view lymph nodes near the prostate and remove these pelvic lymph nodes using special surgical instruments operated through the laparoscope.
laparoscopic lymphadenectomy
:
removal of lymph nodes with a laparoscope.
laparoscopy
:
examination of the abdominal cavity with an instrument called a laparoscope.
laryngectomy

surgery to remove the voice box (larynx), usually because of cancer.
latissimus dorsi flap procedure
:
a method of breast reconstruction that uses the long flat muscle of the back by rotating it to the chest area.
lesion
(lee-zhun)
:
a change in body tissue; sometimes used as another word for tumor.
leukemia
(loo-key-me-uh)
:
cancer of the blood or blood-forming organs. People with leukemia often have a noticeable increase in white blood cells (leukocytes).
leukocytosis
(loo-ko-sigh-toe-sis)
:
having more than the usual number of white blood cells.
leukopenia
:
decrease in the while blood cell count, often a side effect of chemotherapy.
